How can businesses benefit from dynamic waste collection?

Most people don’t think twice about the established model of waste collection – that is, the trash pick up truck regularly comes every week, lifts up the dumpster and leaves. There would be absolutely no problems with this arrangement if there is little or no change in the amount of trash generated every week, but often that is not the case. Even when the bin is only half full and could go for another week without a collection, the garbage truck will still pick it up and charge the small business owner. At other times, the bin is so full that the owner has to pay extra to request an additional pick up. Having to pay for unnecessary and/or extra pickups don’t sound that appealing. What, then, is the alternative? Dynamic/on-demand waste collection.

Dynamic/On-Demand Waste Collection and Its Advantages

As mentioned in our previous blog post, Haulla currently saves customers their money by connecting them to local haulers with competitive collection rates, but in the near future, we will also implement dynamic collection by installing sensors that communicate and log fill-levels to a software that can predict future waste generation. Other than notifying when a collection is necessary, over time it will also work out the optimal collection interval for a bin. If the optimal interval is 10 days, a number that falls right in between increments of 7 days (week), this reinforces the idea that weekly pick-ups are inefficient.

Additionally, less pick-ups will also reduce the cost of waste collection. If you only need and have pick-ups 3 times a month instead of 4 times a month for example, the hauler can charge less and you can pay less. This means you will be able to make additional savings on top of what you saved when you switch over to a local hauler with a better collection rate. But we at Haulla always strive for two goals at the same time—efficiency and sustainability. The aspect that people often overlook is the carbon emissions these waste collection trucks produce in going around to pick up the garbage. With less pickups, there will be less carbon emissions polluting the air.

Why Hasn’t Dynamic Waste Collection Been Implemented?

In many municipalities, it is legally required to have regular collections. Even in areas where there is no such legal restriction, the market norm is to have regular collections. With the aim to bring innovation to the waste management industry so all stakeholders can benefit, Haulla currently services areas where there is currently no legal requirement mandating regular collections. With this as the starting point, we will continue to help businesses save money and local waste haulers gain new customers. As we gain traction, we hope that even municipalities that require regular collections will reconsider allowing dynamic collection.
